Poem - A Harvest lament

We plough the fields and scatter,

The fat-cats are getting fatter,

The good seed on the land,

Greed and selfishness expand,

But it is fed and watered,

Their mindsets need to be altered,

By God’s almighty hand,

Learn to share, not to demand.

This is our prayer, our harvest lament,

What will we do when earth’s riches are spent?

A harvest lament, this is our prayer,

The world is dying, does anyone care?

He sends the snow in winter,

Fragile planet, do not splinter,

The warmth to swell the grain,

Our avarice and ungenerosity, only causes pain,

The breezes and the sunshine,

Don’t think of others, as long as I’m fine,

And soft, refreshing rain,

Our thoughtlessness, floods the world again.

This is our prayer, our harvest lament,

What will we do when earth’s resources are spent?

A harvest lament, this is our prayer,

When will there be enough, for all to share?

All good gifts around us,

When will peace surround us?

Are sent from heaven above,

When will we show love?

Then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord,

To neglect each other, we can’t afford,

For all his love,

Show kindness, give love.

He only is the maker,

Be a giver, not a taker,

Of all things near and far,

Stop our actions, from creating a scar,

He paints the wayside flower,

Stop our abuse of power,

He lights the evening star,

God watches from afar.

This is our prayer, our harvest lament,

What will we do when earth’s justices are spent?

A harvest lament, this is our prayer,

People are starving, trade is not fair.

The wind and waves obey him,

Miserliness; what profit can we skim?

By him the birds are fed,

Poverty and famine, is this why Jesus bled?

Much more to us his children,

Don’t worship idols that are gilden,

He gives our daily bread,

Me, me, me; is compassion dead?

This is our prayer, our harvest lament,

What will we do when earth’s charities are spent?

A harvest lament, this is our prayer,

Each other’s burden, do we bear?

All good gifts around us,

When will kindness surround us?

Are sent from heaven above,

When will we show God’s love?

Then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord,

To neglect our planet, we can’t afford,

For all his love,

Show empathy, give only love.

We thank you then, O Father,

Be merciful, or unforgiving, which would you rather?

For all things bright and good,

Help us to look after, our local neighbourhood,

The seed-time and the harvest,

To be a blessing and to be blest,

Our life, our health, our food,

Help us to nurture, an understanding mood.

This is our prayer, our harvest lament,

What will we do when earth’s people are spent?

A harvest lament, this is our prayer,

Concern for our fellow man? Where?

Accept the gifts we offer,

Be a believer, not a scoffer,

For all your love imparts,

Plant seeds of fellowship, firmly in our hearts,

And, what you most desire,

Fill our lives with holy fire,

Our humble, thankful hearts,

Then a genuine, selfless love for others, starts.

This is our prayer, our harvest lament,

What will we do when earth’s compassions are spent?

A harvest lament, this is our prayer,

People are suffering, show how to care.

All good gifts around us,

When will grace surround us?

Are sent from heaven above,

When will we share God’s love?

Then thank the Lord, O thank the Lord,

To neglect our communities, we can’t afford,

For all his love,

Show humanity, give only God’s love.
